Concrete for a Railroad Town

Garrett is a DeKalb County city just west of Auburn and about 15 miles north of Fort Wayne, and much of what concrete contractors do here involves homes built during its railroad years. Garrett was platted in 1875 when the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was extended to the site, incorporated as a city the same year, and named for John W. Garrett, the B&O's president. The population more than tripled from 1,268 in 1880 to 3,910 in 1900. By 2020 it had 6,542 residents and 2,617 housing units. We pour and replace driveways, sidewalks, steps, patios and garage slabs.

Old blocks, narrow lots

Older railroad towns like Garrett often have compact lots with houses close together. That affects concrete work in practical ways. Driveways are often narrow and run along the side of the house to a detached garage at the back. Front steps rise straight from the sidewalk. Access for a concrete truck can be tight, so we plan the pour carefully, sometimes using a pump or wheelbarrows to reach the back of the lot without damaging the yard.

Detached garages on these lots are frequently old, and their floors may be cracked or broken into pieces. We can remove an old garage floor and pour a new one with a proper base and a slight pitch toward the door.

The Garrett Historic District

Garrett has a historic district listed on the National Register, along with several individually listed homes and the former Sacred Heart Hospital, built in 1902 and listed in 1983. On older homes, front walks and steps matter to how the house looks from the street. We keep replacements simple and well finished, and match the scale of the original steps.

Ground and weather

Garrett sits at about 883 feet, higher than Fort Wayne, in Keyser Township. Like the rest of the region, it sees freezing winters, so exterior concrete needs air entrainment, a compacted stone base and closely spaced control joints to survive. If you see the surface of a step or walk flaking off, that is usually freeze damage, often worsened by salt.

The town's history includes the Creek Chub Bait Company, founded here in 1916, and a historical marker went up at the old factory site in 2017. Garrett has grown slowly but steadily since 1970, so there are newer homes on the edges of town as well, many of which need patio additions or driveway extensions. Garrett Questions

Can you reach a detached garage at the back of a narrow lot?

Usually yes. We plan access before the pour and use a pump or other methods when a truck cannot get close.

Why is the surface of my front steps flaking?

That is called scaling, and it usually comes from freeze-thaw cycles and de-icing salt. Badly scaled steps are typically best replaced with a new air-entrained pour.

Do you pour new garage floors in old garages?

Yes. We remove the broken floor, rebuild the base and pour a new slab that pitches slightly toward the door.
