The Look of Stone With One Solid Slab
Stamped concrete in Fort Wayne gives a patio, front entry or walkway the look of slate, fieldstone, cobble or brick while keeping the strength and simple upkeep of a single poured slab. Color is added to the mix or the surface, then pattern mats are pressed into the concrete while it is still workable, and a release agent adds shading in the low spots. The result has no individual pieces to heave, shift or sprout weeds between.
Where stamped concrete works best
- Back patios where you want something more finished than plain gray.
- Front entries and walks that frame the house from the street.
- Driveway borders and aprons, with the driving lanes left in broom finish for traction.
- Pool decks and seating areas with a lighter, textured pattern.
We are cautious about stamping steep ramps or full driveways that carry heavy salt and plow traffic. A sealed, stamped surface can be slicker when wet, and the decorative layer shows wear sooner where tires turn and scrape.
Pattern and color choices
Popular patterns include ashlar slate, random stone, cobblestone, running bond and herringbone brick, and wood plank. Most jobs use one base color with a second release color for depth, and a border in a contrasting pattern or color can define the edge.
To pick colors, look at the house: roof, brick, siding and trim. We bring samples to the measuring visit and can match a border to existing brick on the house.
What makes stamped concrete last here
Under the color and pattern, a stamped slab needs the same structure as any outdoor concrete in Fort Wayne: a compacted stone base, a fall away from the house, air-entrained concrete and joints planned into the pattern so they disappear into grout lines. Because the surface is sealed, the sealer is the main upkeep. Resealing every few years keeps color from fading and stops water and salt from getting into the surface.
Texture can be added to the sealer for better grip, which we recommend on walks, steps and pool areas.
What it costs
Stamping adds cost because of the color, extra labor and sealing. HomeGuide's guides list stamped patios at $9 to $30 per square foot installed, stamped driveways at $8 to $26 per square foot, and stamped walkways at $10 to $21 per square foot, adding about $3 to $4 per square foot over a standard finish. On an existing slab that is sound, HomeGuide's resurfacing guide lists a stamped overlay at $7 to $15 per square foot for a single pattern and up to about $20 for complex designs.
Overlay or new pour?
A stamped overlay is a thin decorative layer over existing concrete. It works when the slab underneath is level and only worn on the surface. If the old concrete has sunk, heaved or cracked through, an overlay will crack along with it, and a new stamped slab is the better buy. We check the old concrete during the measuring visit and tell you which route fits.

Stamped Concrete Questions
Is stamped concrete slippery?
Sealed stamped concrete can be slicker than broom-finished concrete when wet. Adding a grit additive to the sealer and choosing a textured pattern improves grip on walks, steps and pool areas.
How often does stamped concrete need sealing?
Plan on resealing every few years, depending on sun, traffic and salt. Fresh sealer brings back color and keeps water out of the surface.
Does stamped concrete crack?
Any concrete can crack. Planned control joints, placed along pattern lines so they blend in, give cracks a place to form where they are hard to see.
Can I stamp my existing patio?
If the patio is level and sound, a stamped overlay can go over it. HomeGuide lists overlays at $7 to $15 per square foot for a single pattern. If the slab has settled or cracked through, we recommend replacing it.
